It was that time of year again when NAMPO Cape kicked off with great excitement, and Molatek was part of the excitement! Molatek provides feed that will grow lambs fat and boost sheep farmers’ cash flow!

JC Vollgraaff, the Molatek technical advisor in the Overberg and Stellenbosch area, likes to talk about the current season and the products that Molatek offers for farmers to have healthy, well-nourished lambs. These products, namely Molatek Meester 20 and Molatek Lamb and ewe lick with their high protein and energy content, ensure increased milk production in the ewe.

Kobus Gerber, the Molatek technical advisor in the Southern Cape area of Mossel Bay, as well as in the Klein Karoo, talks about lambs that are weaned and how they benefit in terms of growth and the production of clean, white wool. “It is important to put roughage in the mixes. Because the pasture has so little fibre, fibre is added to the mixtures,” says Kobus.

Here is the recipe for growing nice, fat, healthy lambs:

  • 200 kg Molatek Skaapvetmes Concentrate
  • 50 kg Molatek Bypass
  • 600 kg of grain
  • 100 kg lucerne

This mixture can be given very early (from week two). Should the lambs then be weaned and the finishing phase begins, you can choose whether you want to continue with another 500 g per lamb per day on the pasture. If the pasture is not sufficient, Kobus suggests that the lambs are instead put in a pen with a similar mixture, the only difference being that the lucerne is then increased to 150 kg. Clean drinking water is absolutely essential for animal performance and feed intake.
