Daniël Opperman from Naboomspruit is the TLU SA Young Farmer of the Year. The winner of the 2022 competition was announced at the annual TLU SA congress.
“It was particularly difficult to choose this year’s winner. Every young farmer who entered could have won. That’s how high the standard was and how impressed we were with what we saw,” says Mr. Bennie van Zyl, TLU SA General Manager.
“Daniël is a worthy winner and if you ask me, some of the older farmers should also visit Daniël and some of the other young farmers for a little inspiration!”
Riaan Rossouw from Nigel farmer’s association and Clemens Senekal from Suikerbos farmer’s association were second and third respectively.
Opperman farms with potatoes. “It’s my main crop. Some of the other crops I also farm with are white beans, peas, and green beans.”
According to Opperman, he decided to enter the Young Farmer of the Year competition, to carry him through a difficult time.
“It was something nice that I could do in a time that was quite difficult and challenging. It’s always nice to get recognition and it also gives you encouragement.”
For Opperman, it is very special to walk away with the title.
“In all honesty, I’m speechless. It is an incredible privilege and honour to be named TLU SA’s Young Farmer of the Year.”
