The value that farmers get out of Irrigation Unlimited’s product range
Farmers are facing an unprecedented year of drought and wet conditions respectively, and planting delays due to unforeseen weather abnormalities.
Here’s what Johan Hanekom (70) has to say about the ever-changing needs of farmers in South Africa, and how some of the new additions to Irrigation Unlimited’s range are improving his long-standing success in farming: “I’m not yesterday’s spring chicken, I grew up farming with steel irrigation pipes, and then later aluminium pipes. The problem is that they started stealing these pipes and fittings for scrap metal cash. These new plastic Quick Coupling HDPE pipes and fittings are much simpler to use than steel systems because they are so lightweight. These systems are an absolute winner, I hope to see farmers packing them out in their fields all over South Africa.”
Johan mainly uses the Quick Coupling HDPE systems for overhead cooling when intense heat threatens the quality or lives of his strawberry crops.
Johan has Afriq Drip dripline installed across his farm, which is a water-wise irrigation choice, manufactured locally in Gauteng. Dripline delivers water directly to the root zone of the plant, without wetting the plant’s leaves, stems or fruits. Once a line of dripline is installed, Johan will plant his seedlings directly next to each emitter hole, which in his case is every 20cm repeated across the entire line of drip. From there, he adds plastic mulching to keep his soil moist and stop evaporation. Johan uses 0.40mm Wall Thickness dripline irrigation, made to last 3 years, perfect for his strawberries.
With these two irrigation methods complementing one another so well, Johan, a farmer with more than 40 years of experience in vegetable farming, is a proud supplier of beautiful, sweet strawberries for one of South Africa’s largest commercial wholefood retailers.
